Abacus earns nomination for 2018 Peabody Awards!

Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, directed by Steve James and produced by Mark Mitten and Julie Goldman, earned a nomination this Tuesday for a 2018 George Foster Peabody Award, one of the highest honors in broadcast and digital media. Read the full list of nominees here.

This is Steve James' second Peabody Award nomination, earning a Peabody Award for his 1994 film Hoop Dreams

The film tells the incredible saga of the Chinese immigrant Sung family, owners of Abacus Federal Savings Bank of Chinatown, New York, accused of mortgage fraud by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance. Jr., and world premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival before its world broadcast premiere on PBS' FRONTLINE on September 12, 2017. The film enjoyed an extensive theatrical release through PBS Distribution during the summer of 2017.

Previously, Abacus earned a 2018 Academy Award® nomination for Best Documentary Feature, in addition to three Critics' Choice Documentary Awards nominations – winning Best Political Documentary – as well as a nomination for Steve James by the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directing. The film also earned the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sarasota Film Festival and Best Editing: Feature Length Documentary at the Ashland Independent Film Festival.
